A new deal for the Gophers coach is in the works, a source with knowledge of the situation said Monday evening, and is close to being done.

The source would not disclose specifics of the negotiations, just that Fleck and the Gophers have been in discussions for awhile and are quite far along in the process.

I wasn’t expecting this until the regular season was over. Not because I thought it would be difficult to keep PJ Fleck around… I’ve been talking people off of this ledge for many many many months. Obviously, that chatter has heated up lately, as PJ Fleck has take this Gopher program directly to where he said he would, even faster than he said he would do it. He’s 8-0 in Minnesota and all you have to do is open a newspaper or flip on your television to see rumors floating that link him to openings at USC and Florida State, among others.

PJ Fleck isn’t going to those schools anytime soon, and I’ve been ringing that bell for a long time.  As you can see from this new report out of the Star Tribune, he definitely isn’t looking elsewhere in the immediate future, but I don’t think he’ll look for greener pastures anytime in the next handful of years. I believe PJ when he says he wants to be here for the long haul; that he wants to build something special; that he wants to see this program back to the legendary status it once held. So far, he’s delivered on every bold promise he laid out in his opening press conference. Why should we continue to doubt him at this point?

I really want to give Mark Coyle a hug, too. that guy has been a fucking god-send. Ex-President Kaler deserves credit for hiring him too. As long as Mark Coyle is leading this Athletic Administration, the sky is the limit for where our college sports can take us. As long as PJ Fleck is heading the football team, the same thing can be said there.

As soon as details come out or anything gets finalized, we will let you know. Until then, breathe easy Gopher fans. It’s been clear for awhile, that PJ Fleck isn’t Tim Brewster. Now, he’s shown us he isn’t Lou Holtz either.
