This season the Minnesota Wild have been two things: very good and very injured. The injuries are starting to catch up with them as the winning pace slows. The situation has taken a notable turn for the worse with the recent injury to star player Kirill Kaprizov, dealing a significant blow to their on-ice capabilities.

Kirill Kaprizov out for the Minnesota Wild

The Minnesota Wild superstar has been among the frontrunners for this year’s Hart Trophy. Kirill Kaprizov seemingly does something special on a nightly basis, but that won’t happen Friday as he isn’t with the team and won’t be on the ice.

To date Kaprizov has played in 34 games for the Wild. He leads the league with 20 even strength goals and has a total of 23 on the season. His 50 points put him on pace to surpass the 91 points he put up in 75 games last season.

The injury timing is weird as Kaprizov was seemingly fine for Minnesota on the 23rd in their last game. He scored a goal and recorded more than 22 minutes of ice time in a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Of course hockey injuries aren’t descriptive in nature, so the lower-body injury could be any number of things. The greatest hope would be that Kaprizov is only missing a game or two. After the road contest against Dallas, Minnesota is back home on Sunday against Ottawa.

Hockey insider Jessi Pierce is reporting that Joel Eriksson Ek and Jake Middleton are both working their way back. The two veterans rejoining the lineup would give coach John Hynes more options to deploy on a roster that has consistently cycled through recalls.

The Wild remain in second among the Central division. Chasing down Winnipeg and closing the current five point deficit will be largely reliant on a much cleaner bill of health the rest of the way.
