The Minnesota Wild went to St. Louis on Tuesday night trying to stop a two-game losing skid. Problem is, they had to go without Jared Spurgeon and Joel Eriksson Ek, among other lineup mainstays who are out dealing with injuries.

So how did they get it done? Another impressive performance in net by Filip Gustavsson, who saved 27 of 28 shots, some of which had no business being saved. He improved his save percentage on the season to .948 and his record to 2-0-1. The Wild took home the victory 4-1.

But on a day where he saved more than 96% of the opponents’ shots on goal, Gustavsson did something offensively that was even more impressive. With 12 seconds remaining in Tuesday’s contest, and the Wild up 3-1, Filip Gustavsson gloved a weak shot attempt from the Blues.

Instead of passing to a teammate or forcing a face off, Gustavsson did something no other Minnesota Wild goalie has done before. Then, as if he had done it 100 times before, Gustavsson dropped the puck onto the ice in front of his goalie paddle, and launched it about 175 feet towards a wide open St. Louis net.

And for the first time in the Wild’s 24 year history, it went in. It was the very first goalie goal in Minnesota Wild history, and just the 18th goalie goal in NHL history.

The Wild have now scored 6 points in the 2024-25 NHL season. But Michael Russo (The Athletic) noted on Twitter Tuesday night that, while the Wild technically have just as many losses as they do wins… they are yet to trail in any of the four games they’ve played so far.
