MN Wild Top Defenseman Back Out with Injury

If only the Minnesota Wild could stay healthy. Sure, that excuse is way overused in the sports world, which is why the Wild aren’t the first team to use it and they most certainly won’t be the last. But let’s be real, the Wild have been haunted by the injury moster this season, in a way that even the most ravaged rosters of major pro sports history can’t understand.

You’d be much better off finding a player on the Wild’s roster who hasn’t missed significant time with injury, at one point or another this season. And many times, they’ve played games with two, three, even five or six of their best players out at once.

For the past two months, the list of MN Wild injuries has included the most talented player in franchise history, Kirill Kaprizov. The 27-year-old 2015 5th round draft pick has only played in three games since December 23, yet he’s currently tied at 23 for the most goals on the team, with Matt Boldy.

Minnesota Wild defenseman Jonas Brodin injured again

But another key player the Wild have been without for most of the last month is 31-year-old, Jonas Brodin. That’s why it was pretty exciting when the 2011 No. 10 overall draft pick returned to the ice over the weekend, playing over 20 minutes in a 4-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres, in which Brodin notched an assist.

Unfortunately, any optimism surrounding Brodin’s return to the ice didn’t last long. On Monday afternoon, Jonas Brodin has been ruled out for tonight’s game between the Minnesota Wild and Dallas Stars. According to the team’s announcement on Twitter, Brodin is “day-to-day” with a lower body injury.

In the 39 games this season, Brodin is a +11 with 19 points (4 goals), averaging 22:38 TOI. Had he played anywhere near an entire season, the 13 year blue line veteran would probably be enjoying one of the best offensive seasons of his career. He also played in the 4 Nations Face-Off, which may not have been a very good idea, in hindsight.

He put up 27 points in 62 games last season and 14 points in 60 games the year before. Jonas Brodin’s most point productive season came in 2021-22, when he put up 5 goals and 25 assists in 73 games. Brodin has played over 80 games just once in his NHL career, 2018-19, when he actually played in all 82. He posted 18 total points that season.

Let’s hope and pray this latest setback isn’t all that serious. But given how the year has gone for the Minnesota Wild, so far, I wouldn’t hold your breath while waiting.
