The 2021 Minnesota Vikings season, at a micro-level, has been one of many ups and downs. But from a macro point of view, it’s been mediocre. They’re a middling 5-6 football team toting an above-average, but underachieving offense and a bad (30th ranked) defense whose only battling for a wildcard spot because the playoffs were recently expanded.
There’s still time for the purple to turn things around and their matchup vs the winless Detroit Lions on Sunday could be the perfect launching point. But what if the big turnaround doesn’t happen? What if the Vikings stumble this weekend or anytime during the rest of the season?
Well, Judd Zulgad (current SKOR North voice and former Vikings beat writer for the Star Tribune) said yesterday on one of his podcasts that the Wilfs have already taken initial steps in a process that oftentimes leads to a coaching and/or GM change.
Yesterday, @jzulgad told @DWolfsonKSTP that (according to sources) the Wilf's have recently taken initial steps into what could become a possible head coach and/or GM change. #Vikings pic.twitter.com/CoNq2J0D3A

Zimmer and Spielman are on thin ice.
This isn’t necessarily groundbreaking and could wind up being a complete nothing-burger, should the Minnesota Vikings start winning games this December and turn that into a January playoff run. But should their below-.500 season take a turn for the worse or continue down a path to nowhere, then it’s clear that changes will probably be made.
It seems as though the Wilfs are just as sick of mediocrity as much of the Vikings fanbase. We’ll see if Zimmer, Spielman and the team they’ve assembled can keep their seats cool going forward.
