During joint practices last week between the Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns, wide receiver Jordan Addison hurt his ankle. He was carted off the practice field which immediately concerned fans.

This news hit shortly after head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed that rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy underwent surgery and was going to miss the entire 2024 NFL season.

Despite a week of heart breaking news for Minnesota Vikings’ fans, O’Connell did reassure fans that Addison avoided a major injury. Although it’s not a major or season ending injury for Addison, he did suffer a pretty significant ankle sprain.

Jordan Addison expected back the week leading into the season opener

Appearing on SKOR North, Darren Wolfson (KSTP) gave Minnesota Vikings’ fans an update regarding the status of Addison. During the show, Wolfson noted that Addison was dealing with a pretty significant ankle sprain that is going to set him back for at least another week or two.

“We’re dealing with a pretty significant ankle sprain that is going to set him back at least another week to two weeks. I think he’ll be back practicing that Wednesday of Giants week, but I don’t know if the ankle is going to be 100% in that moment.

This type of ankle injury takes multiple weeks to truly recover from. Plus, it’s one we will have to keep an eye on once he is back out there. So, it’s not necessarily great news, it’s not ‘doom and gloom’ [either]. He’s going to be back. But yeah, it’s still going to be a little bit.”

Wolfson continued stating that he’s expected back mid-week leading up to the season opener against the New York Giants. Wolfson closed that part of the segment stating that he’s unsure if his ankle will be 100% leading into the game.

Jordan Addison’s injury outlook for the 2024 NFL season

Based on Wolfson’s update regarding Addison, it sounds like Addison won’t be 100% healed from his ankle injury. This leaves the open question… will he be a lock to return week one against the Giants?

We’re still a little over a couple weeks away from September 8th, leaving Addison more time to heal. Overall, it’s encouraging that he shouldn’t be completely sidelined for numerous weeks.

Nonetheless, it’s concerning that his ankle likely won’t be 100% week one. It sounds like it could be of the high-ankle variety of sprain, too, which would definitely not be good news.

Judd: “Are we talking a high ankle sprain? Do we know?”

Wolfson: “I don’t know definitively, but I’m lead to believe you’re down the right path. Let’s just say that.”

Ankle injuries can be tricky. They can easily be re-aggravated, especially given the position Addison plays. If re-injury occurs, Addison could miss significant time. Overall, let’s hope O’Connell, the training staff, and Addison are all on the same page regarding his injury and what makes sense for the 2024 NFL season.
