The Minnesota Vikings season is over. But while the Eagles and Chiefs prepare for the Super Bowl in New Orleans, LA this week, a few states to the west is one of the best events on the PGA Tour calendar. The Waste Management Phoenix Open — also known as “The People’s Open” — brings an unmatched fan experience to the game of golf. It’s easily the rowdiest tournament of the year, and undoubtedly the most unique on tour.

A lot of Minnesotans have retired to Arizona or spend time there during the winter. Others plan their cold season vacation down in Phoenix around the event. Some Minnesota athletes even take part in the Pro-Am tournament, which takes place on the Wednesday of each year. Adam Thielen usually makes an appearance, but he didn’t this year. Minneapolis native Larry Fitzgerald did, though.

Min Woo Lee starts Minnesota Vikings SKOL chant at WM Phoenix Open

One hole that makes this tournament stand out is 16, a short par 3 where they’ve essentially built a mini stadium around the hole. On Saturday, after 26-year-old Australian golfer Min Woo Lee sank a birdie putt, he handed his putter to his caddie, turned to the crowd and proceeded to start a Skol chant. Yes, for real.

If you sink a birdie, the crowd erupts. If you settle for par or worse, you’re getting booed off the green. So when Lee stuck his birdie putt from five feet out, he fed off the crowd’s energy, firing up not only the Minnesota fans in attendance, but every fan in the stands was clapping their hands above their head in unison.

It’s unclear whether Lee is a Minnesota Vikings fan or if he had any idea the cheer he was leading is already used in the new(ish) Skol chant tradition at U.S. Bank Stadium as part of the pregame ceremonies, which Min Woo Lee now has an invite to lead next season.

Tomorrow’s final round at the Waste Management Phoenix Open is shaping up to be a must watch. Thomas Detry, still searching for his first PGA Tour win, holds a commanding five shot lead.

But with three-time major champ Jordan Spieth sitting at 13-under and guys like Daniel Berger, Rasmus Hojgaard, and Michael Kim lurking, the afternoon could get interesting. And as always, watch for potential fireworks on 16.
