The Minnesota Vikings saw the future of their franchise, No. 10 overall pick, JJ McCarthy, throw all over the Las Vegas Raiders’ defense on Saturday. Everyone was feeling optimistic about the future at quarterback, when they woke up for work on Monday morning.

But then, JJ McCarthy got into the office and reported some knee pain. An MRI revealed a tear in his meniscus, a devastating turn of events for an organization, and fanbase, that thought, just once, they could get their hopes about about the future.

At the end of the day, we should have known better. On Wednesday morning, reports broke across the NFL insider world, proving Ben Goessling’s Tuesday prognostication correct.

McCarthy’s surgery was completed today and deemed a success. The type of procedure JJ needed could not be determined until after the procedure had begun. Doctors decided, at that time, on a full meniscus repair. That means the 21-year-old will miss the entirety of the 2024 NFL season.

“An update on JJ McCarthy. He did undergo surgery this morning, on that meniscus. It was led by our team doctor, Chris Larsen, at TCO [Performance Center]. It was a successful procedure, but it did reveal that a repair was necessary, which will end JJ’s 2024 season.”

What’s next for JJ McCarthy? Some rest, over the next few days. Then, months and months and months of rehabilitation. No doubt, he will need all of that meditation and training of his mental stability, over the next year.

Until then, the Minnesota Vikings and their fans will turn to Sam Darnold, who no doubt will get a full season’s worth of opportunities to prove he is the quarterback that the New York Jets thought he was, when they drafted him No. 3 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. Not the guy he has shown to be, ever since.
