Most likely, the Minnesota Twins are going to have one of the quietest offseasons in recent memory. The Twins’ current 2025 salary projection has them at approximately $140 million, which is $10 million more than the expected budget of $130 million.

That means, Minnesota will be trying to send out more money than what they bring in, over the next few months. And when you are relegated to clearance rack shopping, it’s difficult to find someone who will fundamentally change your baseball team for the better.

Especially if you trade away your $35 million superstar, Carlos Correa. In all reality, though, that’s probably the only way for the Minnesota Twins to gain any sort of payroll flexibility in the immediate future. He makes double what anyone else on the roster does.

Minnesota Twins open-minded to trading Carlos Correa

Former Cleveland shortstop Carlos Baerga, among others, has really started to push the idea that Minnesota could move their superstar shortstop, in a money-saving move. Buzz surrounding a Correa trade has been picking up recently, as we approach MLB Winter Meetings, early next week.

According to Darren “Doogie” Wolfson (KSTP), on Thursday’s episode of Mackey & Judd (SKOR North), the Twins aren’t necessarily shopping Correa, but they are “open-minded” to trading him, should a team approach president Derek Falvey with a legitimate offer.

“I have not heard of [the Twins] quote “shopping” [Carlos Correa]. Open-minded, though? Yes. Derek Falvey and everyone else in the Twins front office, it’s business as usual, for the winter meetings. They head down to Dallas this weekend. Things really ramp up Monday, even Sunday night. So yeah, could this be a talker next Tuesday, when we have this conversations, in the heart of winter meetings? I wouldn’t be all that shocked.”

Correa leaving Twins could depend on where Juan Soto lands

The main domino to watch is Juan Soto. Doogie believes the Yankees are the team most interested in Correa, but only as a ‘plan b’ if they lose out on the Juan Soto sweepstakes. If Soto lands back with the Bronx Bombers, they likely wouldn’t be comfortable absorbing most of Carlos Correa’s contract.

MLB Insider: Minnesota Twins Have to Consider Trading Carlos Correa…

Wolfson sees the Yankees as favorites to sign Soto. But if they can’t seal the deal, it sounds like New York would then shift focus to Carlos Correa. So, if Juan Soto goes somewhere other than back to the Yankees… watch out, Minnesota Twins fans.

“I think one Domino that needs to fall would be Juan Soto not going back to New York, so the Yankees have that much more financial flexibility. I get it, it’s the Yankees. They should have all the flexibility they want. But they’re still mindful enough, and so if they end up investing $625 million into Soto, are they ready to assume that Carlos Correa contract? So, I pause on that.

But if Juan Soto chooses the Dodgers or the Mets or even the Blue Jays — I don’t think he’s going to Toronto I actually think he’s going to end up back with the Yankees. But I don’t think anybody truly knows. We just think we’ll have a decision here very very soon on Soto. But if he doesn’t end up back with the Yankees, I’ll be paying more attention to that very scenario.”

When healthy, Carlos Correa has been the Minnesota Twins best player, by a mile. In 86 games last season, Correa racked up 3.7 bWAR, batting .310 with 54 RBI, 14 HR, 55 R and a .905 OPS. Unfortunately, he missed most of the 2nd half with a plantar fasciitis issue, that was originally supposed to be nothing.

In three seasons as a member of the Minnesota Twins, Correa has amassed 10.4 bWAR. He’s played in 357 games and made 1,537 plate appearances, batting .272, with a .804 OPS, 124 OPS+, 54 HR and 183 RBI. He also helped the Twins win their first playoff series since 2004.
