Anthony Edwards’ AE1 shoes, by Adidas, are the most popular basketball shoe on the market, and it’s been that way for awhile now. But Wednesday is believed to be the first time they were worn on a big league baseball field, thanks to Minnesota Twins starting pitcher, Bailey Ober.

The Twins are in Cleveland for a crucial late-season series vs the Guardians. After splitting the first two games, pressure was on Ober, to deliver a good performance. So, the 29-year-old right-hander did what any level-headed competitor would. He slid on his new AE1’s, and went to work.

Bailey Ober rocking AE1 spikes has to be the coolest thing I have seen this week, at least so far. But custom spikes aren’t a new phenomenon for this Minnesota Twins starter.

He, Charley McClay (@WinonaKicks – Instagram) and a company called “Custom Cleats” have partnered multiple times before, including some really cool Kobe’s, earlier this season. But wearing AE1’s takes it to an entirely different level.

Maybe it’s the new spikes…?

Entering tonight’s all-important matchup vs the division rival Guardians, Bailey Ober has been arguably the best pitcher on the Minnesota Twins starting staff, this season. In 161.2 innings pitched, prior to tonight, the mid-90’s throwing, 6’9″ red-headed beanstalk had collected 168 strikeouts, posting a 3.90 ERA and 0.99 WHIP. His 2.8 bWAR was tied with Pablo Lopez for the most of any pitcher on roster.

Those numbers impressive numbers will be there, in the morning, too. In seven innings vs Cleveland tonight, Ober allowed just two runs, on four hits, both via solo home runs by Josh Naylor. Bailey threw 101 pitches, including 18 in his last inning, striking out a season high TWELVE Guardians hitters.

Now, I’m not saying it was his new AE1 spikes… but we can’t prove it wasn’t, either.
