The Minnesota Twins have struggled to stay healthy early this season, which is only part of their issues with consistency. After a victory against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night, they finally reached double-digit wins.

Of course, the victory came with a setback, because we can’t have nice things. Luke Keaschall, who was recently called up to the big leagues after an insane rise through the Twins’ minor league system, left the game early on Friday night, and he won’t be around for a while.

Luke Keaschall suffers significant injury for MN Twins

Keaschall — a utility defender who’s played exclusively 2B and DH while he works his way back from Tommy John surgery — was batting in the Minnesota Twins 3-hole when he was beaned by Angels righty, Kyle Hendricks in the 3rd inning. He left the game and didn’t return. Later, we found out the pitch broke Keaschall forearm.

In seven big league games, Keaschall batted .368/.538/.526 with three doubles, a 5/2 K/BB and 5 successful stolen bases. The 22-year-old has been a bright spot for a lineup that has struggled to produce consistent offense through the first 25 games of the season.

While the Minnesota Twins didn’t utilize him as their regular starting second baseman, while he was in the bigs, his defensive ability is substantially higher than that of Edouard Julien or Willi Castro.

A non-displaced forearm fracture will need a cast and 6-to-8 weeks to heal. That means Keaschall will be out of the MN Twins lineup for at least two months, and that’s before we talk rehab assignments.

Twins need infield help with Keaschall going to the injured list

With Willi Castro on the injured list as well, the Twins are running out of infield options on their 40-man roster. Royce Lewis joined the St. Paul Saints for a rehab assignment on Friday night. He played six innings in the field and went 1-for-3 with a double.

It was his first game action since May 16. It’s unlikely that Minnesota immediately recalls him on Saturday, but he could be an option by Monday, in Cleveland. Ryan Fitzgerald may be an option. The 30-year-old has never played in the big leagues but has 668 games of minor league action under his belt. He is batting .313 with a .913 OPS through 20 games with the Saints this season.
