Minnesota Twins Make Room for New Pitcher

Now 16-22 on the season, the Minnesota Twins are taking on water fast, in large part thanks to a brutally bad bullpen that blew yet another lead on Thursday. Manager Derek Shelton is growing more and more desperate for relievers, and recently GM Jeremy Zoll has been throwing a lot of spaghetti at the wall.

Unfortunately, he can’t get any of it to stick. The latest call-up, rookie John Klein, was called upon just days ago to come and soak up some innings. He threw 31 pitches in Thursday’s loss against the Nationals, allowing two runs and pushing his ERA to 7.71 on the season.

Yoendrys Gomez added to MN Twins roster

Then, there’s Wednesday’s trade for Yoendrys Gomez, who owns a 6.23 ERA (7.29 FIP). To make room on the 26-man roster, it appears Klein is on his way back to the minors, after just two big league appearances.

Before the MN Twins acquired him via trade, Gomez allowed 13 runs (12 earned) in just 17 1/3 innings this season for the Tampa Bay Rays. Minnesota hopes to see more of what the 24-year-old displayed at the World Baseball Classic, as opposed to the MLB.

Like the other relievers the Twins have tossed out onto the mound this season, Gomez represents a warm body that can eat some innings this weekend against the Cleveland Guardians.

Considering Gomez owns a 5.11 ERA (5.61 FIP) across 93 1/3 big league innings during the course of his career, the expectations aren’t very high.

The Twins also roster 39-year-old Luis Garcia. They traded for him after he allowed six runs (five earned) in just 6 1/3 innings with the Mets… so this is starting to be a trend.
