MN Twins Calling Up Top Prospect for MLB Debut

There has been no shortage of Minnesota Twins transactions in recent days. Matt Wallner and Royce Lewis were both handed tickets across town back to Triple-A St. Paul. Veteran Orlando Arcia was added to the big league roster, and Derek Shelton continues to cycle new names through the clubhouse.
One of the complicating factors for a Royce Lewis demotion was the expectation that Tristan Gray would wind up on the paternity list. His wife was due with a child any day, and now he’s going to be present for the birth.
With the MN Twins needing another position player, there was only one on the 40-man roster that made any sense. It might be a cameo, but fringe top-100 prospect Gabriel Gonzalez is going to make his big league debut.
Gabriel Gonzalez headed to Minnesota Twins
For the past handful of weeks Gabriel Gonzalez has gotten time at first base. He had primarily been a corner outfielder for the St. Paul Saints, but now he’s set to be a big leaguer. First reported by Marcos Grunfeld (ElEmergente), he’ll join the team in Boston for the weekend.

Will be making his MLB debut.
In 44 games this season, Gonzalez has batted .216 with a .686 OPS. He has 8 home runs and a 39/18 K/BB, but has come on significantly after a slow start. He has six multi-hit games in just 16 contests during the month of May.
The 22-year-old was acquired in the Jorge Polanco trade with Seattle. He remains the only piece left after Anthony DeSclafanci immediately flamed out, and Justin Topa was DFA’d.

Gonzalez is not the most appealing looking athlete, but he can move on the corners. Don’t expect speed or stolen bases, but twitch movements lean into his athleticism. At first base, he should be a step up from both Josh Bell and Kody Clemens.
There is a level of swing-and-miss to his game, and he has expanded the zone against inferior pitching. However, a second jaunt through Triple-A pitching has served him well. Gonzalez has honed things in, and he could quickly provide value.
With Gray out of the lineup for just a few games, this shouldn’t be expected to last long. However, Gonzalez can make a statement as to why he should return for the Minnesota Twins soon, and he’ll likely be someone to monitor as the summer goes on.
