The Jimmy Butler Trade that Ruined the Minnesota Timberwolves Forever

So the Minnesota Timberwolves finally traded Jimmy Butler today while also fucking the franchise and its ever-grieving fan base for the foreseeable future and probably forever.

This was the worst-case scenario for the Timberwolves. Dario Saric and Robert Covington are decent enough players. They’ll log big minutes and play important roles on what is now destined to be a very mediocre team.

And, that’s the problem.

I’ve written and discussed this at nauseum. I want to beat my face against a fucking sidewalk.

We needed another star to place next to Towns, with Wiggins holding up a solid 3rd leg. If we couldn’t get that back in a trade, then we needed an alternate path to that guy. By starting out the season in shit-show fashion, the Wolves were starting to carve that path. There are three freshman at Duke who could help lead a future Wolves squad to greatness right after demolishing the rest of the NCAA on their way to a national title this year.

We had the opportunity to be the 76ers on a fast-track. We were one Jimmy for a couple high picks away. Then, to seal the deal, you could have auctioned Taj, Teague, Rose, and Tolliver for more future assets. The tank-train could have been steaming toward disaster. A disaster that would’ve led to a top-5 pick and a future superstar.

Instead we got two guys who average about 11 points per game and don’t rebound with the numbers that they should. Two guys who will probably help this team win 10 more meaningless games, if they can help this roster gel without the cancer that is Jimmy Butler.

So, go ahead and celebrate that Jimmy is gone. While you’re at it, celebrate the fact that we might now fight for a bottom-rung playoff spot over the next couple of years until we decide what to do with Saric and Covington, once their contracts are up.

Unless KAT and Wiggins both become top-15 players over the next couple of seasons, this team is going nowhere fast. More mediocrity. It’s all fucked. Completely fucked.

This is a fun way to look at it:

Thanks Thibs.
