The Minnesota Timberwolves didn’t finish their 2023-24 season with a championship, but they did make it further than any other Wolves team since 2003-04. On top of that, Anthony Edwards accelerated his ascent to superstardom.

In the fourth year of his professional career, Anthony Edwards rose to new heights last season. He did so wearing his first signature shoe. The Adidas AE 1 became the must have sneaker of the season, and new color schemes continue to roll out.

Anthony Edwards signs as face of Adidas

While he may not be the face of the NBA just yet, Ant’s success, combined with that of his AE1, have Adidas more than ready to make him the face of their brand. On Wednesday, news broke that Adidas has locked down their 22-year-old superstar with a multi-year deal so big (something over $10 million per season) that it officially cements Edwards as the face of the Adidas brand for the foreseeable future.

Edwards played in all but three Minnesota Timberwolves games in 2023-24, allowing him to show off his AE1 on a nightly basis. He averaged a career-best 25.9 points and shooting a career-best 46.1% from the field, which lead to his second-straight All-Star appearance, an All-NBA 2nd Team, and even some MVP votes.

Minnesota Timberwolves pushing Edwards’ stardom

Despite playing for a Minnesota Timberwolves team that hasn’t had a true national star since Kevin Garnett, Anthony Edwards continues to put the franchise on the map. He has elevated the celebrity of Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert while taking the franchise valuations to new levels.

Adidas certainly has seen a spike in revenues, and rewarding the superstar with an eight-figure deal is a good way to continue that steam. It has been a while since Adidas has been this prominent in the basketball sneaker space. Clearly drawing the ire of Nike, Edwards continues to enjoy the back and forth.

Derrick Rose, Damian Lillard, and James Harden are/were all Adidas athletes. None of them, however, found nearly the success as Ant’s AE 1. In order to find something comparable from Adidas, you’d probably have to go back to the Tracy McGrady line.

Low versions of the AE 1 will begin to hit the market this summer, as Anthony Edwards competes for Team USA in the Paris Olympics. And whatever Adidas and Edwards do for an encore to the AE1, will be worth keeping an eye out for. Believe that.
