It’s official. Karl-Anthony Towns and the Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed to a fully-guaranteed $214 million “super max” extension that keeps him under contract for the next six seasons.
Extension time in Minnesota: Karl-Anthony Towns will sign the four-year, $214 million extension that will lock him up in Minnesota for the next six years.

The new money that Karl just agreed to, essentially 35% of the team’s salary cap throughout the life of the deal, does not hit the Wolves’ books until the 2024-25 season. That means they have Towns at a discount for the next two years. After the 2023-24 season; Minnesota will have, at a minimum, two max contracts on roster with KAT (super) and Anthony Edwards.
But make no doubt about it, Towns deserved this extension. In fact, the Timberwolves never thought twice about offering the super max to Karl. Very few players hit the marks needed to land such security. You need between 7-9 years of NBA experience and must meet one of these three prerequisites.
- Made an All-NBA team in the most recent season or each of the two seasons prior to being extension eligible.
- Were named Defensive Player of the Year in the most recent season or each of the two seasons prior to being extension eligible.
- Were crowned MVP in one of the three seasons prior
