Gophers Football Piling Up More 2025 Commits Than Just About Any Team in the Country
The Minnesota Gophers are having their second straight “Summer Splash” recruiting visit weekend in a row and nothing reels in commitments on a hot summer day like beautiful Lake Minnetonka. Whether you’re looking for crappies, walleye, women or recruiting commitments, that lake is money just about every single time.
We are seeing that hold true again on Sunday, a day that has seen (as of 3 PM CDT) PJ Fleck and Co receive commitments from five different players for his class of 2025 (and one late commitment for 2024), as of 7 PM CDT. Pile those on top of the 17 commits they had in the boat prior, and the Minnesota Gophers now have 23 total commits in for 2025.

Sure, 23 commitments seems like a pretty big number, but how does it compare to other schools? Well, Rutgers is the only team in the country with more 2025 commitments, as of Sunday afternoon, than the MN Gophers. They have 26 total, so far. Syracuse (also has 23) is the only other team in the 247Sports’ top-50 with that many.
B1G School | Commits | 5-Star | 4-Star | 3-Star | Not Yet Ranked | National Rank (247Sports) |
Rutgers | 26 | 0 | 5 | 20 | – | 10 |
Minnesota | 23 | 0 | 2 | 14 | 7 | 18 |
Wisconsin | 19 | 0 | 5 | 14 | – | 12 |
Ohio State | 15 | 3 | 12 | 0 | – | 1 |
Penn State | 14 | 0 | 8 | 6 | – | 13 |
USC | 13 | 2 | 4 | 7 | – | 7 |
There are a couple of things that stand out regarding the above table. Obviously, teams like Minnesota and Rutgers need to take the commitments that they receive, while the Ohio States and USCs of the college football world get to hang back and wait for the best recruits to fall in love with them.
Also, the fact that PJ Fleck has seven players committed who don’t even have a composite recruiting rating yet shows a trend that we see quite frequently. That the Gophers’ recruiting staff usually finds three and four star talent before other Big Ten schools, and even before recruiting websites like Rivals, ESPN and/or On3.

The Gophers currently rank 18th in the composite rankings, and 18th in the 247Sports rankings. It will be interesting to see how many commits the Gophers are willing to take for the 2025 class.
Given how many kids transfer, it’s likely a “more the better” situation, but Minnesota has never enrolled a class of more than 26 high schoolers, under PJ Fleck, who hasn’t had a final class of more than 21 since the 2020 class, which enrolled 24 kids.
