The Minnesota Gophers basketball team is set to tip off their 2024-25 season on November 6th, facing Oral Roberts at The Barn. This year’s opener marks not only the start of a new season but also the beginning of head coach Ben Johnson’s fourth year leading the program.

Behind the scenes, Johnson is still working the recruiting trail, an effort that paid off on Thursday, when the Golden Gophers landed a commitment from 2025 three-star Jacob Ross, out of California.

3 star Jacob Ross commits to the Minnesota Gophers

Ross, out of SoCal Academy in Cali, announced his commitment via Instagram. Standing at 6’6″, 170 pounds, with a 7-foot wingspan, Jacob brings strong two-way skills on the wing, and should be a great fit for the Maroon and Gold.

Jacob Ross can definitely knock down threes, but he’s also got the skills to drive hard to the basket. He can create his own shot and easy looks for others. His aggressiveness helps draw a lot of fouls, when he takes the ball to the rim.

Plus, as we see in the clip above, Jacob Ross brings serious energy on defense. He is constantly disrupting plays and keeping opponents on their toes. His hustle and intensity will be a blast to watch next season. Jacob Ross ultimately decided on Minnesota, passing up options like Old Dominion, Albany, Coastal Carolina, and Charleston.

He is the 2nd commitment for the Gophers, in the 2025 class. Kai Shinholser (PA) is the other three-star commit. If Ben Johnson doesn’t win with the team he has in 2024, however, he may not be around to welcome the 2025 class to Dinkytown.
