Gable Steveson will be a larger than life entertainment figure and he knows it. He stated as much on Sunday afternoon when he tweeted, “I am going to be the biggest star the WWE has ever had”. But as it turns out, those dreams can wait because Steveson is returning to the University of Minnesota for another year of college wrestling as a Gopher, according to Andy Greder (Pioneer Press).

Gophers heavyweight Gable Steveson won the biggest honor in college wrestling Monday, and coach Brandon Eggum shared with the Pioneer Press that Steveson plans to return to Minnesota for the 2021-22 season.

Steveson won the NCAA National Championship as a heavyweight last week. In an interview afterward, he stated his future plans with the WWE and upcoming Olympic qualifying tournament. I’m excited to see Gable Steveson jumping off turnbuckles just as much as the next former WWE super fan. But one more year in a maroon and gold singlet first, is even better.

Dan Hodge Trophy

Just before Greder broke the news of Steveson’s return to Minnesota, Gable was named the co-winner of the 2021 Dan Hodge Trophy, awarded to the best wrestler in the country. The other winner was Spencer Lee (Iowa), who went 12-0 in 2020-21 and won the National Championship at 125 pounds.

**A previous headline for this blog incorrectly stated that Gable Steveson had announced his return to the Gophers. As seen in the excerpt above, his coach broke the story through the Pioneer Press.
