The Minnesota Timberwolves made a 120-95 statement on Saturday afternoon, in a game 1 shallacking of the Phoenix Suns that gave them a 1-0 lead in their first round best-of-7 series. Just like that, all the “bad matchup” doubt being piled on the Wolves this week is gone and now pressure is on the Suns to punch back.

What statement did Anthony Edwards & Co make yesterday? That this team came to the NBA Playoffs ready to party and that going home early is not on their event itinerary. There’s one moment from the Wolves’ game 1 dub that has set the tone, though. And not just for this series, but for the future of the NBA.

After Edwards hit yet another ridiculous step-back 3-pointer in Kevin Durant’s face, he backpedaled to the other side of the court while talking trash to Kevin Durant, with the entire basketball world watching. All KD could do was shake his head and smile. We’ve all seen the viral clip, by now.

But… what was Ant actually screaming at his childhood idol? Well, there’s a social media account for that. @NBA_Legendz has over 60,000 subscribers on YouTube and 34,000 followers on Twitter and that page’s main niche is lip-reading and/or using jacked up arena audio to decode trash talk from NBA games that otherwise would never get out.

Here’s their video from last night (along with a transcript of Ant to KD below).

“CAN’T GUARD ME! WHAT THE F*CK DID I TELL YOU, N****? YEA!”

“WHAT THE F*CK DID I TELL YOU? OLD ASS N****, YEA!

Again, after the game, Edwards called KD his favorite player of all time and made it clear that trash talk on the court is all just part of the game. And he’s right. But damn… most people do not treat their childhood idol that way.

Ant is built different, though. And the entire NBA is starting to figure that out. If the Minnesota Timberwolves make a deep playoff run, there’s no telling where Anthony Edwards will end up on the list of active NBA talents… but with the Olympics just months away that question will eventually be answered too.
